A Note from The Virtual Wall

Dogs were used extensively in Vietnam as scouts, trackers, and guards. Each of the services had their own organizational way of doing things; the Army's was to establish separate Infantry Platoons which were assigned to major commands and which provided dog handlers and dogs to lower-echelon units. Then-PFC John W. Burke was assigned to the 38th Infantry Platoon (Scout Dog), a unit of the 25th Infantry Division. According to the 38th IPSD site both handler and dog were killed in action on 16 Oct 1967.

Only three men from the 25th Infantry Division died in Binh Duong Province on 16 Oct 1967:

  • 38th Inf Plt Scout Dog:
    • CPL John W. Burke, Moncure, NC

  • C Company, 2nd Bn, 14th Inf Rgt
While not absolute proof, it's circumstantial evidence that PFC Burke and Rip might have been with Charlie 2/14 when they were killed.
