The photo and following article is taken from The Philadelphia Daily News, special supplement entitled 'SIX HUNDRED AND THIRTY,' October 26, 1987. The special supplement was issued in conjunction with the dedication of the Philadelphia Viet Nam Memorial.

Branigan enlisted in the Marine Corps in July 1966, a month after graduating from Northeast Catholic High School. The lance corporal, a rifleman, was sent sent to Viet Nam in November 1967 and assigned to Company F of the 2nd Battalion, 4th Marines, 9th Marine Division (sic). Branigan died in Quang Tri Province on March 12, 1968, at the age of 19. He was survived by his parents, two brothers and a sister.
