I was a member of the Aero Rifle Platoon of the 11th ACR and myself and others from my platoon recovered the bodies of Captain Dacey and Specialist 5 Sipperley. I remember that day often, it was not a pleasant one. I also remember that no one knew who the co-pilot was, you see SP/5 Sipperly was already signed out of the unit and ready to go home but had decided to sneak off and take one more last flight.

A Note from The Virtual Wall

Two men of the 11th ACR's Air Cavalry Troop died when their OH-6A scout helicopter (tail number 66-17768) was shot down:
  • CPT Bertrand Jahn Dacey, pilot
  • SP5 Lorne Jay Sipperley, observer
Captain Dacey was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for his actions.
