Michael began his tour in Vietnam on May 10, 1969. He was assigned to the 361st Aviation Company (Escort), stationed at Pleiku. On his first mission as pilot of an AH-1G (Cobra Helicopter), he and my brother Aircraft Commander, CWO Mark Clotfelter, were Killed in Action on June 16, 1969. Michael was 23 years old.

Michael Mahowald's name appears on Panel 22 West Line 58 of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C.
