A Note from The Virtual Wall

"BDQ" was the abbreviation for the ARVN Rangers, an elite force which enjoyed a sterling reputation for combat efficiency. Although Major Newman is listed on the 75th Infantry Association's web site, there are no details regarding the circumstances of his death.

Erman Newman was the son of Colonel Erman M. and Mae Adelma Newman. He entered the Military Academy in 1953 and was graduated with the Class of 1957. Following commissioning he served as an infantry officer and completed paratrooper and Ranger qualification. After arrival in Vietnam on 25 March 1966 he was assigned to the I Corps Ranger Advisory Team at Danang. Captain Newman received a posthumous promotion to Major. He is buried at the US Military Academy Cemetery at West Point, New York.

Classmates at the USMA reported Erman's nickname was "Mink".
