I met SSgt Wissig at the Omaha, Nebraska airport on my way to Vietnam. He was in uniform, so I went over to talk to him and discovered that he was headed for Vietnam and he also was going to the same base that I was assigned to. We decided to travel together and stayed the night at the same motel near the Seattle-Tacoma airport. We boarded the same flight to Vietnam and split-up after arriving at Phu Cat Air base. I was assigned to the 1883rd Comm Sqdn taking care of the supply computer. Ed was assigned patrol duty with the security police squadron. I visited Ed once at his hooch on the other side of Phu Cat. The SP's had their own hooch area that was separate from the main hooch area. Ed seemed like a mild mannered type of man. He was very nice. I really didn't get to know him, but knew that he had 4 children at home and was due to retire with 20 years service at the end of his tour of Vietnam. Unfortunately, he and another young airman were killed by a land mine while on perimeter patrol. The rumor was that it was set off remotely. The jeep was blown in half. Many of us made the trip to view the jeep after the incident. I have always felt really bad for Ed and his family because he didn't make it back to enjoy his retirement years with a new civilian job.
