I did not get to know you for a very long time as we only went thru AIT together at Fort Polk in the fall of 1967. You were a humorous person to be around but I never realized how brave you were going to be.

They say that the day your company was ambushed, you laid down covering fire with your M-60 to give your men time to regroup. You fired until the enemy walked the mortars in on you. I never did hear if you received a medal for your bravery, but you certainly should have. I know that I will see you again when my time comes.

Your friend

Ron (Deuce) Vandenberg
