My Dad's name is on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, panel 14W, line 110

610th Transportation Company, Camp Viking, Da Nang,
1335 hrs, 23 JAN 1970

Earlier on Friday, 23 Jan 1970, My father, CWO2 James H. (Jim) Alexander, had instructed a regular private to get a military hair cut and report to him at 1330. The private reported as ordered, but did not have his hair cut. My father, along with the private's squad leader, proceeded to escort the private to the barber shop. Somewhere along the way, the private pulled a fragmentation grenade from his pocket, yelled, "I have been to the barber, and I do not want to get another hair cut!". The private pulled the pin on the grenade and let the spoon fly. Eye witnesses state that the private made a motion to throw the grenade into a group of soldiers playing volleyball. My father struggled with the private, grasping the hand that held the grenade, while he tried to remove the private to an area where several Conex containers would shield the blast.

The grenade exploded.

Back in Pennsylvania, I had just turned six.

( Eyewitness accounts from the CID report about the incident. )

I would like to hear from men who knew my dad.
Please send email to me.
