Jim and I went through WORWAC 68-517 at Ft. Rucker. November 1968 was the last time I saw him. He was well liked and a natural leader. I heard that he was flying Loaches in Vietnam. His death I was told resulted from a catastrophic failure of either the transmission or the rotor system.

It sad to lose someone with this much talent.

James and I were great friends at Fort Wolters. We were in Class 68-31 flight A~2 of the Purple hats. Jim and I and Bill Williams cared for Candidate "JA Purple" when we found the spare time for it. Drove into Fort Worth and Dallas many weekends and Wow what a great Solo party we had. I seem to remember a "Candidate Sturtevant", also in flight A2.

I heard of Jim's death while still in Viet Nam. I was on the Staff at 52nd Aviation Battalion, Camp Holloway.

Respectfully submitted,

A Note from The Virtual Wall

On 24 June 1969, WO James K. Ameigh, pilot, and SP4 James A. Slater, observer, were flying as the second aircraft, call sign DARK HORSE 15, in a flight of two OH-6A "Loach" helicopters on a visual reconnaissance mission. The aircraft (tail number 66-17813) crashed, exploded, and burned 8 kilometers north-northeast of Lai Khe airfield. Later investigation of the wreckage indicated that it had been hit by hostile fire.
