Mike, I think you and I have communicated in the past and some of my input may have been used. I was the "chase aircraft". There is a lot more to this story but people get bored easily. A Note from The Virtual WallOn 18 July 1971 C Company, 101st Aviation Battalion, was tasked with extracting a four man recon team from a location in western Quang Nam Province, SVN, due east of the Laotian city of Ban Bac. The pick-up aircraft was a UH-1H (tail number 68-15671) flown by WO1 Aston and copilot CW2 C. R. Custer. The evolution went smoothly until the UH-1 began lift-off, when it was hit by enemy fire, rolled right, and crashed.Aston had been shot in the head and his body was pinned in the wreckage. The recon team's medic, a Sergeant Richmond, determined that Aston died from massive head and neck wounds, but the body could not be extracted from the aircraft. The seven survivors were extracted by the chase aircraft. Enemy activity in and around the crash site precluded bringing in heavy equipment needed to extract Warrant Officer Aston's body and his remains therefore could not be recovered. |
