11 September 1966: PBRs 29 and 82 came under automatic weapons fire on the Co Chien River 26 miles southeast of Vinh Long. The VC killed one PBR forward gunner in the firefight that ensued. BM3 Charles A. Baker was the first U.S. Navy PBR sailor killed in a VC ambush according to U.S. Naval Historical Center's History of U.S. Naval Operations in the Vietnam Conflict Volume III, Part I, 25.
