REMEMBERED ACROSS THE YEARS

PFC Ralph Harry Barlett, Jr, qualified expert with the rifle, grenade, and mortar.

Bronze Star with "V"

"For heroism in connection with military operations against a hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. PFC Barlett distinguished himself while serving as a mortarman with Company E, 3d Battalion, 8th Infantry. On November 11, 1967, Company E was engaged by two enemy machine guns located just outside its perimeter. PFC Barlett and the mortar section immediately began engaging the enemy positions, knocking out one of the machine guns. He went outside the perimeter under fire, dismantled the enemy's weapon and brought it back into the company area. The mortar section and PFC Barlett then assembled the weapon inside a crater, and began engaging the other machine gun position. Shortly after this was accomplished, he was mortally wounded by a hostile round which landed inside the crater. PFC Barlett's courage and self-sacrificing devotion to duty and mission are in keeping with the highest tradition of military service, and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army."
