Earl, I think of you often, especially around Memorial Day.

I remember running track together at Tennyson. We would run and you would have to stop to have a cigarette. Typical for you. I would wait and then we would continue to run.

I served with the 3rd Battalion, 4th Marines and was in country much after you.

Wait for me this time and we will continue to run together.

I will never forget! Semper Fi, Marine.

A Note from The Virtual Wall

The Battalion Landing Teams embarked in the amphibious ships just offshore the northern provinces of South Vietnam provided a ready reaction reserve force and usually were sent in to areas where there was a serious need for immediate combat forces. In May 1968, the 2nd Battalion (Reinforced), 4th Marines, was one of the two reserve BLTs.

In the third week of May the North Vietnamese and Viet Cong forces launched their third - and as it turned out, last - major offensive of 1968. The freshly introduced NVA 304th Division and other NVA/VC forces were active in Quang Tri Province, and BLT 2/4 was introduced into the fighting. The BLT 2/4 Marines lost 32 men between 17 May and 06 June, with the majority - 19 men - killed in action in very heavy fighting on 25 May 1968:

  • B Co, 1st Amtrac Battalion (attached BLT 2/4)
  • E Co, 2nd Bn, 4th Marines
