James Charles Baumer, an Engineman-Fireman in the U. S. Navy, was born in Sandusky, Ohio, but later moved with his family to Huron, where he lived near the Huron River.

He enlisted in the U. S. Navy on September 1 following graduation from Huron High School. He was sent to South Vietnam following a second entry into the service of his country in January, 1969.

Jim was killed in action Jan. 21, 1970 on Vain Co Dung River at Go Dam Ha, South Vietnam as a result of drowning. The River Assault Craft on which he was riding was mined by the enemy and sank in 15 feet of water.

His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Baumer, Sr., Huron, Oh., were presented his awards and ribbons. He posthumously received the National Defense Service Medal, the Purple Heart, the Combat Action Ribbon, the Vietnam Service Medal with one star, the Navy Commendation Medal with Combat "V", and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal. He was 20 years, one month and two days old when he lost his life in action.

The once forgotten faces and stories behind the simple etching of a name on a black marble Wall come back to life... Over 58,000...

This wrinkled snap-shot caught my attention and reminded me of how young and handsome we were - "...the sweet bird of youth" ... and how lucky we are...
