01 Jan 2007 Sergeant Bengen Killed in Action - First Sgt. Arthur B. Bengen son of Mr. and Mrs. Anton Bengen, 3700 Meridian St., was killed in Vietnam last Saturday. Sergeant Bengen died of multiple shrapnel wounds from an enemy land mine while leading a patrol in Quang Nam Province. He is the 39th man from the area to be killed in Vietnam. Sergeant Bengen was in his second tour of duty in Vietnam. He received the Army Commendation Medal for heroism in Vietnam during an ambush on 20 Oct 1964. A 1952 graduate of Bellingham High School, he enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1953. Survivors include the widow, Eva, and two children, Ronda, 12, and Arthur, 7, of San Diego; his parents, a brother, Benard W. Bengen of Bellingham; four sisters, Mrs. Mary Paul of Everett, Mrs. Tona Hamstra of Seattle, Mrs. Martha DuVall of Kirkland and Mrs. Louise Downing of Bellingham; and his grandmother, Mrs. Eda Davis, Fairmont MN. 21 Mar 2007 Gunny Bengen was my Platoon Commander in boot camp. I remember him well and was saddened to hear this news. Along with S/Sgt Mayfield and Sgt Sophocles we had a pretty good platoon. A Note from The Virtual Wall Two men from the 2nd Combined Action Company were killed by a mine on 01 Nov 1969 - 1stSgt Arthur B. Bengen and Sgt Jimmie J. Butler of Bernie, Missouri. Sergeant Butler was assigned to CAP 2-4-5, while 1stSgt Bengen was with the CAP's parent unit.
