The database page for Grover Bowen

19 Sep 2004

Grover was in country just under one month when he was killed in an explosion at Fire Support Base Russell on 9/21/69.

The explosion also killed my father, Leo "Portugal" Silveira, and the two Kit Carson scouts who purposely caused the explosion.

James Jackson, Jr., disappeared after being medevac'd from the explosion and in 1980 was declared "presumed dead".

Obviously I did not know Grover, but he served alongside my father for the 28 or so days he was in Nam - Grover was a sniper, my father was a scout/sniper. Grover did not deserve to die. The explosion should never have occured prematurely as it did.

If any of Grover's family sees this, please email me.

You are not forgotten, Grover!

A Note from The Virtual Wall

On 21 September 1969 Fire Support Base Russell, northwest of the Rockpile and just south of the DMZ, was being shut down. The fortifications and excess munitions were being prepared for destruction in place when an accidental explosion killed four men and wounded fifteen others. The four dead included LCpl Leonel M. Silveira, Pfc Grover Bowen, and two Vietnamese scouts. One of the wounded, Pfc James W. Jackson, was evacuated with the other wounded to the US military hospital at Quang Tri City - where he simply and inexplicably disappeared.
