R W Brooks

The photo and following article is taken from The Philadelphia Daily News, special supplement entitled 'SIX HUNDRED AND THIRTY,' October 26, 1987. The special supplement was issued in conjunction with the dedication of the Philadelphia Viet Nam Memorial.

Brooks, 24, enjoyed crew, football and tennis. He earned a business degree from Drexel Institute of Technology and was in the ROTC program. He graduated in 1966 and entered the Army in December of that year. Brooks planned to save a portion of his officer's salary to pay for law school. The first lieutenant, a platoon leader in Company B of the 2nd Battalion, 1st Infantry, 196th Light Infantry Brigade, died on the South China Sea coast near Chu Lai, Quang Tin Province, Viet Nam, on December 28, 1967. He was posthumously awarded the Silver Star. Brooks and his wife had been expecting their first child. Survivors included his wife, parents and a brother.
