A Note from The Virtual Wall

C Troop, 3rd Squadron, 17th Cav was redesignated as D Troop, 3rd Sqd, 5th Cav around the first of December 1970 and officially belonged to 9th Infantry Division. However, they were attached to the 5th Infantry (Mech) and operated along the DMZ at the time. Their call sign was CHARLIE HORSE throughout, and they were nicknamed the "Baggers".

On 11 Feb 1971 a D/3/5th Cav UH-1H (tail number 67-17768), call sign CHARLIE HORSE 21, launched to pick up the crew of a downed OH-58 scout helicopter about one nautical mile northwest of the "Rockpile". During the mission CHARLIE HORSE 21 was hit by .51 caliber machinegun fire, rolled inverted and crashed. CW2 Kenneth Allen Barger and crew chief PFC Raymond Frank Carroll were killed in the crash, while the other pilot and gunner survived.
