A Note from The Virtual WallMaster Sergeant Coffey was assigned to the B-52 Detachment (also known as Project Delta) based at Nha Trang. B-52 was responsible for training ARVN Special Forces and the 91st ARVN Ranger Battalion, as well as other U.S. and allied forces, for long-range patrols, road watches, hunter-killer missions, and other forms of unconventional warfare. In addition, B-52 units were capable of deployment to "hot spots" throughout Vietnam and did so when and as directed by the South Vietnamese General Staff and/or USMACV.On 11 August 1967, MSG Coffey was an advisor with a B-52 unit operating at Lang Vei (A-101), about 5 miles southwest of Khe Sanh in Quang Tri Province, and was killed in action in an engagement with NVA forces. |
