Notes from The Virtual WallOn 14 April 1969, a six-man recon team consisting of team leader SSgt. Charles V. Newton, Sgt Charles F. Prevedel, SP4 Douglas E. Dahill, and three unidentified Vietnamese Special Forces troopers were inserted into the jungle covered mountains of northwestern South Vietnam. Recon Team 6 was to locate, observe, and report on enemy activity in the areas of Quang Nam and Thua Thien Provinces adjacent to the Laotian border.On 16 April the team reported contact with the enemy, and at noontime reported they were under attack by a larger enemy force and needed an immediate emergency extraction. Shortly thereafter radio contact with Team 6 was lost. Weather conditions prevented insertion of a relief force until the next day. The relief force conducted a thorough search of Team 6's last known location and continued the search until 25 April but found no trace of Recon Team 6. The six men were classed as Missing in Action on termination of the formal search effort. The Secretary of the Army eventually approved Presumptive Findings of Death for the three Americans, Dahil on 11 Sep 1978. Their bodies have not been recovered. |
