The database page for Charles R Davis, Jr
Sp5 Davis and I were both assigned to the 3/17th Cavalry in 1964, and the 1/9th Cavalry in 1965. We left for Vietnam in August of 1965 aboard the USS DARBY. On our last night aboard ship, while we were approaching the coast of Vietnam, Lt. Col. John B. Stockton assembled the squadron on deck to give us a summary of what we could expect during our tour in Vietnam. He then asked us to look at the soldiers standing beside us and said, "One of them will not return alive, so remember them as the brave men they were". SP5 Davis was standing to my left. I knew him as a soldier in peace time, and as a comrade in arms in time of war. He was a dedicated soldier who sacrificed his life to save others. He must not be forgotten. I thank Charles for being a part of my life.
