SP4 GUMESINDO DE LA ROSA, D-1/11 Infantry, 1st Bde, 5th Infantry Division, played football for his Riviera Independent School District High School in Riviera, Texas. Perhaps the lessons of football were with SP4 De La Rosa on 12 November 1969 when he insisted he be allowed to go on the mission with his brothers as their machine gunner; then later as he provided supressing fire during their assault in Northern Quang Tri Province. Wounded and downed by small arms fire, De La Rosa suddenly rose with his machine gun and began cutting down the enemy. He continued until the effects of his wounds rendered him ineffective. When a medic began rendering first aid, he too was wounded and killed.
