Eddie Duel was born to play baseball. From the time he was four years old, his Dad made sure he had a baseball bat in one hand and a glove on the other. His natural ability to hit the ball was evident even at this early age. His formal baseball career started with the Hamden Father's Baseball program. He excelled at every level, eventually playing for Hamden High School, graduating with the class of 1966.

In his junior year at Hamden High he was instrumental in his team winning the State Championship. He played first base and right field and his batting average that year was .412. Area coaches nominated him to the All District All Star Team in both his junior and senior years. He was recruited by the University of New Haven, one of the premier baseball programs in the area at that time.

He received his draft notice in the spring of 1968 and reported to Fort Dix for basic training. He was then sent to Fort Polk for advanced infantry training. He arrived in Viet Nam on 10/1/68. He was killed in action on 10/21/68, just 18 days after his 20th birthday. He was killed by a land mine while on patrol in South Vietnam. He received a Purple Heart and Bronze Star for his heroic actions that day.
