12 Oct 2001 I was introduced to "Double-D" at the Wall on Veteran's Day, 1999. The man who introduced us was a combat medic who had heard that the LT's father was looking for men who knew his son. Within two weeks, I found his father ... we have been friends ever since, even making a trip to the Wall together. I have talked with Doug's brother and his aunt, who both miss him terribly. I wish I could have known him... A memorial from a family friend, CeCe Corvera 30 Sep 2006 He'd lost his son to a sniper Dec. 31, 1968 His life would never be the same, haunted by this fateful date. Visiting the Moving Wall, tho' painful.. helped him deal with his loss Never beginning to imagine whose path he was about to cross. On this day, with each name read, they'd release a white balloon To honor those who were sacrificed.. young souls who'd gone too soon. It was after this it happened while standing in the summer heat.. A single white balloon descended, landing at their feet. Silently, they stood there as they watch the emotional sight.. As if his son was letting him know "Dad, I'm here.. I'm alright." The story was in the paper about the balloon at the Moving Wall Bringing about another miracle when he got an unexpected call. "Mr. Dugger, I was the escort home for the buddies that I lost.. Douglas was there also... That's when our paths first crossed." "I held onto his dog tags ever since that long ago flight. It's time to get them to you.. it's the only thing that's right." Now, there is some closure.. some little peace of mind.. Brought about by this small gift... by unseen ties that bind. Expect small miracles to happen with visits to the Wall.. Let white balloons remind you of those who answered the call.
