Terry was assigned to A/3/21st Infantry at Tay Ninh, near the Cambodian border. He never complained in his letters home and was looking forward to getting married when he returned. He told his family that during leisure times he would play his guitar to entertain friends.

Terry's unit was drawing ammunition for a patrol when a mine exploded. He was struck and killed by fragments.

He had been in Vietnam for 6 months.

He was 20 years old.
