I was with Lima Company, 3rd Battalion, 1st Marines when we heard that a Chicano had been hit. We heard it over the PRC25 [Note - a portable radio]. It's been close to 40 years come August 7th since then. May LCpl Raul Flores rest in peace. We were not too far from Kilo 3/1 on that day.

A Note from The Virtual WallThe 3rd Bn, 1st Marines Command Chronology contains the following entry:"At 2100H, vicinty BT086665, Company K, 3d Battalion, 1st Marines blocking position received one hand grenade within a firing position and small arms fire from maximum range approximately 300 meters southwest of position. Platoon returned SAF and ten rounds M-79. Enemy fire ceased. Squad investigated area from which hostile fire was received with negative results. Two USMC KIA."The two men killed by the grenade were Cpl Elliott Simmons of Buffalo, New York, and LCpl Raul Flores. |
