Although our marriage was shortened because of Viet Nam, we share a beautiful daughter, who is now the mother of 3 beautiful children, all of whom resemble you. They are your living memorial. I hope they will inherit your abilities to see the good in others and not to judge others too harshly. You will always be missed and loved by your family.

Dale,
I was only a teenager when you were taken from us. The memories I have are of a warm person who made my big sister very happy. I may have even had a little crush on you myself. You were always kind to me, plus cute. I wish I would have had the time with you to get to know you better. I'm sure you would have been a wonderful brother-in-law. You have remained in our hearts and always will.

Love always,
Your sister-in-law

I am proud to say I served with Dale while in the 35th Engineer Battalion (Combat), while stationed at Ft Lewis, Washington as well as going to Vietnam on a troop carrier, the USS William O. Darby. We arrived in Vietnam the first part of December 1966 and set up our Base Camp up at LZ Hammond. Dale was shot and killed on 12 Jul 67, just outside the perimeter, in the line of duty. It has always bothered me that Dale missed out on his wife Pat's and his daughter's lives. Dale was a good man and is missed by everyone who had contact with him. I would like to hear from anyone who served with us. Thanks and God bless Dale's family...

Hi Dad,
I wish I could have known you in person, but I feel that I've gotten to know you spiritually. Mom and everyone has told me how wonderful you were and how kind and caring you were. They say I have those qualities. My kids and I all have strong resemblance to you, for that I am glad. The last couple of years I have gotten to know Bill really well and that has been such an important part of my life. He has helped me to understand what happened to you and has made me feel like you're still alive and very near. I love you Dad, I always will. I know you would have approved of my adoptive dad, so I'm sure that helps you rest. I do hope me and my kids will always make you proud. Love you always, your daughter Dedee.

Dale, you were a good friend when we were growing up. We had some good times together. Wish things could have been different. I still think about you and Dave from time to time.

Dale, it has taken just under 40 years for me to come to grips with your and Frank's deaths on July 12, 1967. We all lost a little in that place so far away. I witnessed what happened to you and Frank and was told not to return fire because of the woman and children around your vehicle. That's one order I should have disobeyed. Sorry, my friend. I would imagine the Sergeant of the Guard that late afternoon is even sorrier. God bless you, my friend, and rest in peace throughout eternity.

My name is William Underwood ("Treetop"). I served with Dale for 11 months in the states and during his time in Vietnam. It has taken a long time for me to get over this. He was very good man and I am proud to have served with him. He died doing his duty for his country. Pat, you and Dee can be sure he will always be a hero my eyes.
