Allen and I met at boot camp in the summer of 1966 - Platoon 3079, MCRD San Diego. We were in the same squad and a friendship came easily. After boot camp, he went to Vietnam as a grunt and I was assigned to the Air Wing. We wrote letters back and forth for nearly a year until one day in September of 1967, I got one back. There isn't a day that goes by that I don't think of him. I eventually served in the Nam with the 1st MAW at DaNang in 69/70. My sister gave me a tracing of his name from the Wall. I've been by there twice, but can't seem to make it all the way to the memorial. It's been 40 years since we met. Seems like yesterday. Godspeed, Allen.
