A Note from The Virtual Wall

On 18 May 1968 an RF-4C (serial 66-0442) was shot down while conducting a reconnaissance flight near Dong Hoi in southern North Vietnam. The two crewmen, Captain Terry J. Uyeyama of Leonia, NJ, and Captain Tommy E. Gist of Durant, OK, were classed as Missing in Action.

Almost five years later, on 14 March 1973, Captain Uyeyama was released during Operation Homecoming. Captain Gist did not come home - he apparently had been killed in the incident. On 30 May 1974 the Secretary of the Air Force approved a Presumptive Finding of Death for Gist, who had been promoted to Major. His remains have not been repatriated.
