Patrick was the radioman in one of our recon squads in the Recon Platoon, E Company. Very well liked by everyone in our unit. He was the silent type who never seemed to have a negative view on anything.
Pat was a medic in HHC, but his assignment with us was as a radioman. In fact, if he had not been carrying the radio on his back, he might have been able to crawl to safety after being shot. He tried to crawl with it on but it must have been too heavy. When he tried to take it off, the enemy kept shooting him. The day of the firefight and his death, including three other Recondo's, has and will always be in my memory. Just before this mission, Pat and a few of us had been talking about what we were going to try to accomplish in our life after our year in Nam. It has always bothered me that some of my buddies in recon, which includes Pat, never had the chance to do so. |
