(Thomas Campbell, circa 1888) Virtual Wall Note On the night of 11/12 August 1969 Landing Zone BECKY was garrisoned by the 2nd Battalion, 8th Cavalry, and A Battery, 1st Battalion, 30th Artillery. At 0300 on 12 August elements of the North Vietnamese 95C Regiment attacked the base. Although the initial assault was driven back, a second attack, accompanied by heavy rocket, mortar, and RPG fire, began at 0340. The enemy withdrew by daybreak, but 2/8 Cav and A/1/30 Arty had 19 men killed in action: A Battery, 1st Battalion, 30th Artillery SSG Samuel Abrams PFC Greg A Barker SP4 Bobby L Bevard SP5 Jeremiah M Hayes PFC Gary L Hoskins PFC William T Smith SSG George E Snyder CPT Donald H White CPL Richard J Zisko 2nd Battalion, 8th Cavalry SP4 Bruce M Barnes, C CO SGT Thomas W Carrington, C CO CPL James P Eckles, C CO SP4 Fredrick P Gillen, C CO PFC Kenney E Lassiter, E CO SGT Harold G Miles, C CO SP5 George R Platter, C CO SP4 Lee R Shaw, HHC PFC Garry G Smith, E CO SP4 Marion L Zipp, C CO SP5 Jeremiah Hayes' actions during the attack warranted the posthumous award of the Bronze Star Medal for valor in action. He is remembered by his comrades in the 30th Field Artillery the Hard Chargers
