John arrived in Vietnam January 12th 1970. I had been there since September 1969 and had gotten to the point that I did not want to get close to anyone new because it was too painful to lose a friend. We talked a lot and it didn't matter how hard I tried not to we became friends before I knew it. After I had known him a few weeks he told me that he was certain that he would not leave Vietnam alive. I tried many times to talk him out of that idea but had no luck. After that I just made an effort to put it out of my mind but it was always there. I once heard that if when a person dies and there are 5 true friends at his funeral you can consider his life a success. We could not leave Vietnam to attend funerals so every month or two when we were on a Firebase we would have a memorial service for the men we had lost since the last one. John's life was short but a very large success.
