You were the one who was supposed to come back

Your sparkling gray eyes, hearty laugh, and mischeveous sense of humor remain imprinted in my memory. Sometimes you let me walk down the high school hallway with you. You taught me how to drive a stick shift in your '56 Chevy. I trimmed your flattop. You went to a jungle halfway around the world. I sent you care packages that ended up being 2 week old crumbled cookies before you got them and you declared them delicious. It never occured to me that you would not come home. You were young and strong and wise and invincible. You were my big brother. And the pain has never gone away, I just learned to deal with it.

Nothing has been the same in our family since you died. There is an empty place in each of our hearts you used to fill. Thank you for having the courage to serve our country when it was not a popular cause. Thank you for being my big brother.

I will love and miss you for always.

It is hard to imagine what our country would be like without brave men, like Stuart, who are willing to lay their lives down on her behalf. I am forever grateful for the sacrifice he and so many others have made so that we may live our lives in safety. Let us keep the memory of these men and women in our hearts. Thank you, Stuart.

From a grateful American.
