We were sweeping along a road junction looking for some VC/NVA that had ambushed the morning road sweep. It was Cecil Lambert's very bad luck to simply walk right up on two of them hidden in some brush on the other side of the road. He couldn't have been more than twenty or thirty feet away from them, maybe less. In my imagination I can see them lying there, weapons aimed at their nameless enemy while they silently begged whatever gods they believed in over and over that we'd turn and follow the road away from them. But we didn't and a few minutes later Lambert and the two of them were dead. Later that day, when we were talking about it someone said they'd heard a yell that, "Lambert's hit and we can't get anyone up to help him!" Then our Corpsman, Doc Dean, yelled, "The hell we can't." and went to Lambert's aid. He too was shot, but he lived. A true act of courage. Visit Golf 2/7 Marines
