A real character, I remember him from basic. Someone I would never forget. SP4 Fred J. Le Blanc was the commander of a military vehicle on a mission when it detonated a mine. He was assigned to Troop A, 1st Squadron, 1st Cavalry, Americal Division. Le Blanc was the 20th Bayonne, NJ, resident to die in Vietnam. Le Blanc was active in the Civil Air Patrol and completed a summer training course at Mitchell Air Force Base, NY. He had served for three years in the Marines, having been stationed in Okinawa for two years and Camp Lejeune for a year, leaving active duty as a Lance Corporal. Le Blanc re-enlisted in the service with the U.S. Army and served for six months in Germany. He attended Army schools in North Carolina where he was graduated from the Military Assistance Training Adviser Senior Non-Commissioned Officer course at Fort Bragg. He also completed 12 weeks of language training in Vietnamese (Saigon dialect) at Briggs Field, Fort Bliss, Texas, and training at the Academy of Language Studies at El Paso, Texas. Le Blanc was stationed in Vietnam eight months before his death. He was the recipient of the Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster, National Defense Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and the Vietnam Campaign Medal. The Vietnam Veterans of America North Jersey Chapter 151 is named for SP4 Fred Le Blanc.
