I was on Fire Support Base Maureen that night and in the foxhole with him.

There are days I wished I would have stayed with you in that foxhole. I am sorry - I needed to leave our position to close up the perimeter. I often think of what would have happened if I had stayed with you - would you be alive? Would I have died? It hurts me to think of that. There are very few days I don't think of you. Accept my apology please.

A Note from The Virtual Wall

Fire Support Base MAUREEN was situated on Hill 930 about 32 kilometers west-southwest of Hue City. On 07 May 1970 the FSB was subjected to a sapper attack which cost the lives of seven men from Delta Company, 1/506 Infantry:
  • 1LT Lawrence E. Fletcher, Winchester, VA
  • SSG Joseph V. Redmond, Savanna, IL
  • SGT Lloyd W. Jackson, Austin, NV
  • CPL Robert F. Berger, Rock Tavern, NY
  • CPL Jose A. Gonzalez, Norwalk, CA
  • CPL Robert R. Lohenry, Chicago, IL
  • PFC Peter A. Cook, North Adams, MA
Private Kenneth Michael Kays, a medic with Delta 1/506, received the Medal of Honor for his actions during the attack. Although the lower portion of his left leg was was removed by a satchel charge, PVT Kays continued to seek out and treat the wounded, refusing evacuation until the other wounded had been taken out. He died on 29 Nov 1991.
