24 Nov 2001 Paul R. Lozano Killed in Viet War Action The Daily Tribune Thursday, May 16, 1968 Bay City, Matagorda County, Texas Army Spec. 4 Paul R. Lozano, 19, of Bay City was killed in hostile action in South Vietnam Monday the Defense Department announced today. Lozano is the son of Joe Lozano of Bay City and the husband of Mrs. Rosa Cervantes Lozano of Angleton. He was stationed at the 125th Signal Battalion Relay Station at Nui Ba Den, north of Saigon near the Cambodia border. He was killed by a shotgun blast at 10 p.m. Monday but no other details of the incident were available today. Lozano had reported to Vietnam on June 20, 1967. He was due to return home in mid-June. He attended Bay City High School. Lozano wrote in a letter recently that he was one of five men stationed at the relay station located on top of a mountain. Funeral services are pending. Survivors include his wife and his father; two sisters, Mrs. David Barron of Wharton and Josephine Lozano of Bay City, and four brothers, Ruben Lozano, Pete Lozano, Raymond Lozano and Jesse Lozano, all of Bay City. His death is the ninth Matagorda County death of the Vietnam war. Paul R. Lozano was killed May 13 in action while stationed at the 125th Signal Battalion Relay Station at Nui Ba Den, north of Saigon near the Cambodia border. He was killed by a shotgun in a fire fight with Viet Cong troops. Lozano is the son of Joe Lozano of Bay City and the husband of Mrs. Rosa Cervantes Lozano of Angleton. Rosary will be said at 8 p.m. Friday night at the Taylor Brothers Funeral Chapel. Father Richard Jeffery will officiate at the Funeral Mass, with burial to follow in Cedarvale Cemetery. Lozano is survived by his wife; father; two sisters, Mrs. Inez Barron of Lane City and Josephine Lozano of Bay City; and four brothers, Ruben Lozano of Galveston, and Pete, Jessie and Raymond Lozano of Bay City. The flag at the Matagorda County Courthouse will be flown at half staff today and Saturday in memory of Lozano. Placed by a member of the Matagorda County Historical Commission. 30 Oct 2006 May God Bless the soul of this great hero and to all the others who sacrificed their lives for us. I too am a Lozano but no relation to this fine young man. I was a mere child when death came upon Paul, but I recall seeing the Vietnam War on television and looking for my father. My father made it back and I belive it was because of soldiers like Paul. I am sorry for the loss of this young man and the pain his family has felt. I pray that one day they may all be together in peace and love. A Note from The Virtual Wall Nui Ba Den (Black Virgin Mountain), a dormant volcano, rises some 3000 feet above the surrounding plain in Tay Ninh Province. During the war, the Army had a signal relay station atop the mountain, and Allied troops controlled the plain below - but the slopes of the jungle-covered Black Virgin were no-man's-land. A number of different Army units were represented atop Nui Ba Den. On 13 May 1968 the VC attacked the relay station, killing 21 American servicemen including 11 men from the 125th Signal Battalion: CPT George Coleman, Birmingham, AL 2LT Thomas N. Teague, Mountlake Terrace, WA SSG Ray W. Owen, Columbia, SC SSG Harold A. Stone, Champaign, IL SSG Bobby C. Wood, Monroe, LA SGT Joseph Adams, New Orleans, LA SP4 Albert E. Dahl, Aurora, IL SP4 James A. Davis, Orlando, FL SP4 Paul R. Hoag, Poughkeepsie, NY SP4 Michael J. Juneau, Hessmer, LA SP4 Paul R. Lozano, Bay City, TX Captain Coleman, SSG Wood, SGT Adams, SP4 Adams, and SP4 Davis were infantrymen, assigned to the station as a security force. 2LT Teague, SP4 Dahl, SP4 Juneau, and SP4 Lozano were signalmen. SSG Owen was a medic; SSG Stone and SP4 Hoag were food servicemen. On 13 May all were soldiers, and all died in the hand-to-hand fighting that took place atop the Black Virgin Mountain. Although regularly assigned to the 587th Signal Company, SP4 Lozano was on temporary duty with the 125th Signal Battalion radio relay station at Nui Ba Den.
