As 3rd Platoon Commander, Hotel 2/7, S/Sgt. McCall proved to be a Marine's Marine. I, a Lance Corporal, was a fire team leader in 3rd Squad and met "Sergeant Mac" while stationed at Liberty Bridge. He made an awesome first impression and showed excellent command ability. We grew to be friends and I appreciated the things he taught me, both in the field and about dealing with various personalities I would encounter in the Corps. He died while assisting another wounded Marine.

I've never known a braver man nor one more caring about his fellow Marines. Perhaps we'll meet up in another place on another trail. I can only hope so.

A Note from The Virtual Wall

The 2/7 Marines lost four men on 14 July 1968, two each from Golf and Hotel Companies, during Operation Eager Yankee in the Phu Tho District, Thua Thien Province. They were
  • G Company:
    • Cpl Gregory R. Rayfield, St Louis, MO (DoW)
    • Pfc Wayne J. Vessell, Senoia, GA

  • H Company:
    • SSgt Gerald A. McCall, Atlantic City, NJ (Silver Star)
    • LCpl Steven J. Scott, New Baltimore, MI
While the 2/7 After Action Report for Operation Eager Yankee does not detail the circumstances of Staff Sergeant McCall's death, available information indicates that his radioman, LCpl Scott was wounded by a mine and that SSgt McCall was fatally shot while trying to assist LCpl Scott.

SSgt McCall is buried in Site 4313, Section J, Beverly National Cemetery, Beverly, New Jersey.
