A Note from The Virtual Wall

On 23 June 1969 a C-130 (tail number 61-0965) from Tan Son Nhut was conducting a resupply flight to the Special Forces base at Katum. While flying at 3000 feet it was hit in the port wing area by radar-controlled quad .50 caliber antiaircraft gunfire. The hits caused a fire and engine failure, and the C-130 spun into the ground. There were no survivors of the crash. The bodies of four crewmen were recovered shortly afterwards, but the other two men were not repatriated until 1994. The crewmen were
  • LTC Jean A. Kearby, Austin, MN
  • Maj William H. Condit, Worthington, OH (remains repatriated 1994)
  • Capt Gary E. Brunner, Racine, WI
  • 1st Lt Terry M. Reed, Randolph Afb, TX (remains repatriated 1994)
  • SSgt Billy W. McDonald, Maryneal, TX
  • SSgt George C. Peters, Roodhouse, IL
