29 Aug 2005 Michael was my cousin and I never knew him ... growing up miles apart, we never had the opportunity to become acquainted. Recently I was talking to his father, Mallory Montgomery, and he mentioned Michael's death in Viet Nam. I did a little research and couldn't find him listed with a memorial and as a living Vietnam Vet could not let that stand. Here is what I know. On 5 May 1968 Landing Zone (LZ) Peanuts, located west of Khe Sanh in Quang Tri province, was attacked by a North Vietnamese Regular Sapper Battalion. Vastly out-numbered, the battle grew intense and in some cases got down to hand to hand combat. The NVA Regulars were supported by heavy mortar, rocket and artillery fire which took its toll of American lives. One was CPL Michael M. Montgomery. A Note from The Virtual Wall Landing Zone Peanuts was located near Lang Vei, west of Khe Sanh, in what had to be called "Indian Country". In early May 1968 North Vietnamese Army regulars attacked the fire base at LZ Peanuts.
