Siler Jr, 20, of Odessa was killed in action in Vietnam Friday when a helicopter in which he was a crew member crashed due to hostile ground fire, the Marine Corps said Monday. Siler was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Manley E. Siler, 204 E. 45th. Funeral services are pending. The Marine was a graduate of Permian High School, and was a member of the class of 1967. He entered the Marine Corps in June of that year. Siler trained at Camp Pendleton, Calif. And went to a Marine Corps school in Jacksonville, Fla., before shipping to Vietnam in April of this year. The ground fire from the enemy caused loss of the tail rotor of the UH-1E helicopter on which Siler was a crewmember, causing the craft to crash, the Marine Corps said. The action occurred 15 miles northwest of Quang Tri City in Quang Tri Province, according to the Marine Corps. In addition to his parents, he is survived by three brothers, Thomas A. Siler of Lubbock, and Richard E. Siler and Joe Siler, both of Odessa. Copyright Odessa American Reproduced under 17 USC �107 POSTHUMOUS AWARD - The family of U. S. Marines Corporal Manley E. Siler Jr., 20, 204 East 45th, who was killed in Vietnam Oct. 10, gathered at the Marine Corps Training Center in Midland recently to receive two medals the youth was awarded. Those present at the ceremony were (L-R) Major G. R. Meibaum, who made the presentation, Joe Siler, Mr. and Mrs. Manley E. Siler, 204 East 45th, and Mr. and Mrs. Richard Siler, 307 East 19th. Corp. Siler was killed while serving as an aerial gunner aboard a helicopter. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal. A Note from The Virtual Wall 10 Oct 1969 two UH-1E gunships from HML-367 were tasked with a fire mission against enemy positions near Con Thien. The number two Huey, UH-1E BuNo 152438, was heavily hit in the tail boom/tail rotor area and crashed. Three crewmen were killed in the crash; the fourth, pilot Edward Bauernfeind, was severely injured but was rescued by a nearby Army unit. The three dead were 1stLt James L. Rhodes, Kansas, IL LCpl Danny R. Hesson, Parkersburg, WV LCpl Manley E. Siler, Odessa, TX Lance Corporal Siler is buried in the Maple Springs Cemetery, Madison County, Jackson, Tennesse.
