JD was my cousin on my grandmother's side of the family. JD had 19 days left in-country when he died. He had been nursing a leg wound sustained in earlier combat action when he tripped off a Viet Cong booby trap. When word came in that another helicopter had been shot down and the crew was trapped under enemy fire he volunteered to go on the rescue of the crew. He jumped from his chopper, sending a spray of bullets toward the Viet Cong who had his buddies under fire. Running toward the downed helicopter, JD began helping the trapped GI's out. Then a bullet evidently hit the copter's gas tank causing an explosion which killed JD.
