Corporal Donald J. Smith served four months with B Battery 2nd Battalion 13th Artillery before his death at Fire Support Base Bragg II on January 19, 1969. Shorty Smith was killed in the same artillery engagement as Sergeant Robert T. Miller. Bob Newcombe and several other B Battery members were wounded in this mortar attack. Bob was hit early and dragged into a bunker by Shorty Smith, who returned to his position with a gun crew. The gun crew continued counterbattery fire on the suspected mortar location. Shorty died of wounds while manning a 105mm howitzer during the engagement. Rich Reed and Bob both credit Shorty with saving Bob's life with this selfless act. Artillerymen in Vietnam were famous for returning enemy fire without regard for personal safety. "Without Fear, Favor, or Hope of Reward" is the motto of the 13th Artillery Regiment. Shorty personified the motto, and is remembered by batterymates Rich Reed, Mike Marks, and Bob Newcombe. FSB Bragg II was the worst place they recall serving. Many artillerymen have said that the 2nd Battalion 13th Artillery was the ultimate professional artillery unit under fire in Vietnam. Men like Shorty Smith contributed mightily to this accolade.
