Mission Notes

On 19 May 1970 four men of the 135th Assault Helicopter Company died when their UH-1C gunship (tail number 66-00527) was shot down by a quad-50 caliber antiaircraft gun about three miles east of Cai Ba:
  • 1LT Lanny Guy Ladouceur, pilot
  • CPT John Spurgeon Sprewell, copilot
  • SP5 Larry Evans Stone, gunner
  • PFC Richard Lee Herrington, Jr, crew chief
A second gunship was hit and seriously damaged by the same AAA site but was able to return to base with the four crewmen alive. PFC Herrington was flying in place of 527's regular crew chief, William Hysmith.
