Tri-City Marine Dies in Vietnam. Marine Lance Corporal Tommy L. Stephens of Kennewick died Sunday in a hospital at Da Nang, South Vietnam. Two days earlier he received gunshot wounds while on patrol. He is the 13th Tri-Citian to be killed in the Vietnam War. The son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl B. Stephens, 7121 W. Arrowhead Ave., Kennewick, he had been overseas nine months. Stephens graduated from Kennewick High School in 1965. He was a member of the Church of the Nazarene, Richland. He entered the service 12 Nov 1965, and was a member of Co. B, 1st Bn., 7th Marines. Surviving besides his parents are three sisters, Jeannine, Janice and Carla. His maternal grandmother is Ina New, Norcatur KS. He was born 2 Apr 1947, in Walla Walla. He had lived in the Tri Cities since 1951. Time for the funeral services will be set when the Marine's body arrives from overseas. Einan's Funeral Home has charge.

Notes from The Virtual Wall

On 15 March 1968 elements of the 1st Battalion, 7th Marines, were operating in "Happy Valley", a dozen miles southwest of Danang. The area was a hotbed of NVA and VC activity and, as the name implies, characterized by jungle-covered mountains. Over a four-day period - 15 to 18 March - the Battalion lost 17 Marines and one sailor to enemy action:
