First Sergeant Thomas was a native of Pecos, Texas. He dropped out of Pecos High School in 1948 and entered the U.S. Army at age 17. He was a veteran of 18 years in the Army. He served in the Korean War and had duty stations in Germany, Fort Sill, Texas, served another tour in Korea and several other stateside stations. He is reported to have died from a heart attack in Vietnam while serving as a Battery First Sergeant at the age of 37. He is remembered by the community of Pecos and the Permian Basin Vietnam Veterans' Memorial in Midland, Texas. He was buried with full military honors in his home town of Pecos, Texas.
