The photo and following article is taken from The Philadelphia Daily News, special supplement entitled 'SIX HUNDRED AND THIRTY,' October 26, 1987. The special supplement was issued in conjunction with the dedication of the Philadelphia Viet Nam Memorial.

"Jerry" Wahlen graduated from Thomas Edison High School in January 1963 and worked as an apprentice machinist for Technitrol Corp. on Allegheny Avenue for 2 1/2 years before being drafted into the Army in September 1965. He enjoyed playing basketball and baseball. Wahlen was sent to Viet Nam in June 1966, where he was a grenadier in B Troop of the 1st Squadron, 4th Cavalry. The 22-year-old specialist four died on February 16, 1967, near Hoi An, Quang Nam Province, as a result of fragment wounds to the back of the head suffered when the truck in which he was riding was shelled. Wahlen was survived by his parents and a brother.
