John's cousin, David Clark of Atlanta, Georgia has graciously assisted me by providing a picture of him for this memorial and also information about his awards and decorations. John was married to Janice Brunner, formerly of Odessa, Texas. She now lives in California and is remarried. John was awarded a Distinguished Flying Cross and Bronze Star prior to his death. He was then awarded a second Bronze Star posthumously. John is buried in his home town of Neoshe, Missouri.

After John graduated from high school in 1964, he attended the School of the Ozarks (now College of the Ozarks) in Point Lookout, Missouri before he joined the Army. While in college, he played bass in a combo and worked for the college radio station.

John Wallace Killed In Action While Serving In South Vietnam

Mr. and Mrs. John L. Wallace, of Route 5 Neosho, received word Monday night from their daughter-in-law, Janice Wallace, that their son John C. "Wally" Wallace was killed in action in Vietnam last Thursday when his helicopter was shot down.

Warrant Officer Wallace had been in Vietnam only two months where he was serving with the First Air Cavalry Div. in the area north of Da Nang.

Twenty-two years old, W.0. Wallace was a 1964 graduate of Neosho High School.

A helicopter pilot, he was stationed at Camp Evans in Vietnam and was shot down over hostile area in the northern part of South Vietnam on a mission to pick up stranded combat soldiers.

He entered the service in June 1967, and was stationed at Fort Polk, La., Fort Wolters, Texas, and Fort Rocker. Alabama, before he was sent to Vietnam in July of this year.

In action less than two months, W.O. Wallace received two combat medals, a Bronze Star and an air commendation with valor for landing under fire in hostile area.

Survivors include his wife, Janice, who lives in Odessa, Texas; his parents, Mr and Mrs John Wallace, Neosho; a brother, Steven who is a student at Neosho High School; and a sister, Mrs. Shirley Jean Baker, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

Funeral arrangements will be announced at a later time.

My name is Tom Watkins and John (Wally) and I were friends when we were both students at the College of the School of the Ozarks in Hollister, Missouri from 1964 to 1966. He was in the same dormitory, Smith Dorm, where I was dorm President and he was on the dorm council. We became friends and ran around together the last semester we were in school.

He worked at the school Radio Station as a disk jockey and was very good at it! When my wife and I announced our engagement, he was the first person to bring us a wedding gift. That was the type of guy he was, considerate and thoughtful! He was very polished and sophisticated for his time. I know over the years things can get blown out of proportion, but he was truly a nice guy!

My name is Patrick Bieneman. I served with WO Wallace in "C" Troop, 1/9 Cav. I was in the infantry and I know we counted on him to get us out of troubled spots many times. Sir, I am proud to have served with you. Your actions in Vietnam brought great honor to you, your family and to the 1st Cav.

From a comrade in "C" Troop 1/9 Cav,
