I am an ROTC cadet at the University of Texas. I do not know 1LT Lester L. Wood. However, after reading, I greatly value and appreciate all he has done. He has shown me the true meaning of duty and selfless service. Now, I am more motivated to become an officer in the military and fulfill my duties.

A Note from The Virtual Wall

An engagement east of the city of Loc Ninh on 11 Sep 1968 cost the lives of three men from C Company, 1st Battalion, 2nd Infantry, and initiated a four day fight which took the lives of 39 American soldiers, including the 1st Infantry Division's Commanding General. The 2/1 Infantry lost four men on 12 Sep 1968:
  • 1LT James A. Smith, Blackfoot, Idaho;
  • 1LT Lester L. Wood, Dallas, Texas;
  • SSG Larry R. Sims, Rolling Meadows, Illinois; and
  • PFC Philip L. Tank, Ecorse, Michigan.
Major General Keith L. Ware had received the Medal of Honor for actions during World War II, and was the recipient of the Distinguished Service Cross and Silver Star for personal valor in combat. His command helicopter was shot down on 13 Dec while he was overhead the battlefield.
