Tom Yagle was the first U.S. serviceman from the Grand Traverse Region of Michigan to be killed. He was a Mortarman with the 81's Platoon, Headquarters and Service Company, 2d Battalion, 9th Marines, 3d Marine Division, FMF. He was killed in action on 16 April 1966, from multiple fragmentation wounds in Quang Nam Province of the Republic of South Vietnam. He is listed on "The Wall" in Washington, DC, Panel 06E-Row 119. He is buried in Oakwood Cemetery in Traverse City, Michigan. A Marine Corps flag flies over his grave. The Yagle Brothers Detachment #165 of the Marine Corps League, P.O. Box 1273, Traverse City, MI 49685-1273, is named in his honor.

A Note from The Virtual Wall

As noted above Lance Corporal Yagle was assigned to the 81mm mortar platoon, H&S Company. While The Virtual Wall cannot prove it so, it is believed that LCpl Yagle was with Hotel 2/9, which lost five other Marines under exactly similar circumstances. They were
